Don’t call it a Comeback

Growing up as a kid in the 80s I was like a lot of kids at the time, I loved board games. It didn’t matter to me if it was something simple and silly like Life, Monopoly, or Sorry or along the lines of more strategy oriented games like chess, Risk, or Scrabble. The biggest problem for me was not having a lot of people to play these games with. The older you get the tougher it is to find people who find it enjoyable to sit down and play Boggle or Yahtzee no matter how much alcohol is involved.

Recently though I’ve noticed a resurgence in word games thanks to the onslaught of technology. In general technology means the death of these types of board games but with the iPhone and its app for everything I’ve noticed everyone and their sister playing Words with Friends. This is basically Scrabble with the board rearranged a bit as to not infringe upon copyright laws I imagine. There are also other apps allowing these types of word games to be played in other languages. I get bye in a couple other languages and it’s always fun and challenging to play such a game and try to put together words. It’s a lot tougher than you might think. (It’s hard enough already in English)

I’ve never been a tournament Scrabble player but it is something I could see myself enjoying if I had an infinite amount of time. With the recent spike in these types of games I’ve taken to killing some of my precious free time revising at least the 101 acceptable two letter words (http://www.trussel.com/scrabble/2words.htm) and then especially for Boggle play too, the three letter words. (http://www.yak.net/kablooey/scrabble/3letterwords.html) You’ll notice a lot of the two letter words you already know you just need to think about them in the proper context. As for the three letter words, there are a lot more of them and a bit more work but it’s worth it. You can dominate a good Boggle game and really improve your Scrabble game by knowing how to run together words for a big score. I also prefer to know the meaning of a word rather than just knowing it is a word so I linked you to sites that have a definition beside the word itself.

My recommendation the next time you have nothing better to do than go watch some movie you really don’t want to see on a Friday or Saturday night is to get a few friends together and kick it old school Scrabble style.
